Websites for teaching and learning English

BBC Skillwise

Includes content that is appropriate for all levels

English and maths for adults – all levels of ability. This is British, but almost everything is usable. This website contains an extensive variety of teaching and learning tools including information, games, worksheets and quizzes. It explores different text types and purposes; reading, writing, listening and speaking skills; learning strategies and numeracy.

Learning English

Appropriate for levels 2, 3

There are lots of videos and ongoing programs including ‘The Grammar Gameshow’. Students can watch a news report (and other types of video content) and then complete an online quiz to test their understanding. This is a great website for students to use for self-study. It contains English learning programs in different languages too.

Many things

Includes content appropriate for all levels

There are Hundreds of interactive activities from easy to hard. Everything from matching/identification (vocab) games, pronunciation activities, crosswords, quizzes, grammar activities, spelling activities… it’s huge. It’s excellent for student self-study.

ESL Lab

Appropriate for levels 2, 3

This website contains a range of English conversations to listen to. When you click on a conversation you will access a page that contains pre-listening exercises, audio, online multiple choice questions (which can be scored and corrected at the click of a button), post-listening exercises and online Investigation activities. It would be quite good for student self-study.

Note: Different accents and pronunciation make the listening a little difficult at times, and the speed of conversation is mostly natural, though relaxed. Because of these features, this resource is probably best used for levels 2-3, even at the ‘easy’ level.

ESLfast

Appropriate for levels 1, 2, 3

This site does contain excellent listening tasks with close exercises and other good activities (Vocabulary, Sentences and Dictation) on content, however it’s pretty clunky to use – especially the vocabulary lists (when you click on a word the link takes you to a definition in an online dictionary, but then you have to hit the ‘back’ button to go back to the list). Due to the awkwardness of use, it’s probably best to use by teachers to copy and paste activities into documents for printing, to be used in class whist playing the audio to the group. Levels 2 – 3 could use the resource for self-study if they possess reasonable computer skills.

Bogglesworld

Teacher resource

Worksheets, jobs, flashcards, lesson plans, and activities for teaching ESL and EFL. These are printable, not interactive. The organisation of resources on the main page isn’t great, but the menus are useful. The flashcards are good, though some are aimed at children, and there is quite a range of crosswords and word searches.

ESL YES

Appropriate for levels 1, 2, 3

1,600 Short Stories for English Learners, with Exercises, Audio, Grade Level. Choose an item and you will be taken to a page with a transcript where you can listen to audio. The page will also contain links to Vocabulary, Cloze, Crossword, Sentences and Dictation. This is much like ESL fast, with the same issues, however, the interactive crosswords are great.

ESL radio and TV

Appropriate for levels  2, 3

Audio and some videos on different topics with quizzes. Searchable by category, which could be useful when looking to cover particular topics.

This is very similar to ‘News in levels’, but contains a range of activities for every reading. Students or teachers can select a news item at the required level to access the news report and literacy activities on the content. The activities are not interactive, so students either need to copy and complete their work in exercise books, or teachers need to copy and paste them into a word document and print them off.

ESL café

Appropriate for levels 2, 3

There are Hundreds of ‘lessons’ (information only) on grammar, vocab, spelling etc. at different levels. There are also online quizzes to test this knowledge. This could be very good for student self-study, but it requires at least a level 2 reading ability if students are using it independently.
